THREES

A tiny puzzle that grows on you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Conserve Battery" actually do?

Threes normally runs at 60 frames per second. When the conserve battery option is on, the game runs at 30 frames per second. This means the animations are a little less smooth, but this uses less battery and for some with older phones, can improve performance.

How does scoring work?

We thought long and hard about this and in the end, came up with a solution based on the number 3 itself! Each card has a rank. The 3 card is Rank 1. The 6 card is Rank 2, and so on. Since this is Threes, take the number 3 and put it to the power of each card's rank number. For instance a 192 is Rank 7, so take 3 to the 7th power. 3^7 = 2,187 points. Or you could think of it 3*3*3*3*3*3*3 = 2,187.

We did this because it was important for each rank to be worth more than just double the previous card. In fact, it's worth triple. For example, if you're playing and you have two 192s on the board, then those two 192s need to be worth less than a single 384. It's much easier to just have two 192s than a single 384. It takes more planning and skill to merge them, especially the higher you go.

Here's a break down of how the first ten ranks stack up:

A 3 = 3^1 = 3 points
A 6 = 3^2 = 9 points
A 12 = 3^3 = 27 points
A 24 = 3^4 = 81 points
A 48 = 3^5 = 243 points
A 96 = 3^6 = 729 points
A 192 = 3^7 = 2,187 points
A 384 = 3^8 = 6,561 points
A 768 = 3^9 = 19,683 points
A 1536 = 3^10 = 59,049 points

Threes crashes every time I load it up, how do I fix this?

This is an iCloud related issue, follow the steps below to fix:

  1. Download iOS8
  2. Delete the app
  3. Download the app
  4. Open the app and let it crash
  5. Go into settings - iCloud - drive - and turn it off for Threes
  6. Delete the app
  7. Download app again

NOTE: If you have multiple devices and this continues, try doing this for each device.

IF THIS DOESN'T WORK: Some folks have had success by going into Settings on iOS8 and scrolling down to the Threes listing and turning ON Cellular Data for Threes.

Do you have any tips or tricks for getting better at Threes?

We don't, but our friend Ryan Clark wrote up a great strategy guide for Threes. Check it out here.
